When I first met with Nick and Rebecca, they talked about how they had noticed so many wedding vendors or blogs talked about “unique” weddings, when, in fact, so many things looked the same and just like every other event. For their own wedding in July, Nick and Rebecca planned what I think was truly a unique event in every sense of the word, infused with their own personality, style and wishes, from start to finish.
Chicago is a city of dog lovers, but I don’t think I have met anyone that loves their pup quite as much as Nick and Rebecca! Their little pooch, Isabelle, was involved in the entire day, hanging out with Rebecca at the James while she prepared, serving as a joint flower girl in a little pink satin dress, and even dancing a second first dance with Nick and Rebecca at the reception. :) Rebecca looked so gorgeous in a completely custom and one-of-a-kind dress and veil from Chicago designer, Alice Padrul. While vacationing in Argentina, Nick and Rebecca stumbled upon some shoes that looked like cats, and Rebecca decided she had to have them for her wedding! After tracking down the designers, the shoes, complete with whiskers, made a fun complement to her wedding day look.
The ceremony was held on the patio at Architectural Artifacts on one of the hottest days we’ve had this summer. It featured beautiful readings including a lovely reading of one of my favourite songs, the Magnetic Fields’ “Book of Love” by one of Nick’s groomsmen, and poems by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Wanting to deliver their own vows but being in such a public setting, Nick and Rebecca actually whispered their vows to one another rather than saying them aloud. I had never seen this before, and thought it was just so cute! The reception featured great music from Toast & Jam, delicious food and even beer from the Logan Square brewery, Revolution. After dancing the night away and spending a few nights in the city, they jetted off for what is probably the most enviable honeymoon—a trip to Sweden complete with a Prince concert where, in the words of Nick, they dumped “3 tons of purple confetti during Purple Rain.” Can’t imagine a cooler wedding and better honeymoon—I shall remember this one for a long while!
After a wedding at Architectural Artifacts last fall, I could not wait to shoot there again. Eric and Kellie fortunately contacted me about shooting their wedding at the space. I was also so pleasantly surprised to find out that there were being married on the outdoor patio; I have never seen any photos of a ceremony outdoor there and didn’t even know it was a possibility. Venues with an outdoor ceremony option in Chicago-proper are almost non-existent, so needless to say it was a rare treat to photograph in the daylight. Eric and Kellie also had a relaxed Jewish ceremony, with four of their friends holding up the chuppah; it was such a nice touch, and I really loved the idea of your friends surrounding and covering you as you take the vows. There were so many other things I loved about this wedding: Kellie’s beautiful gown that she accessorized herself with a little belt, a brooch in the back, and a beautiful feather and gold hairpin; Eric shoes and purple socks; our fabulous portrait locations (so happy with these); and their wonderful families (both so kind and so funny).

Oh, Brett and Julie. When I met these two, I knew we were a perfect match, and I was so happy that I was selected for their day. Brett and Julie became probably my closest clients of the year, and I am so thankful for being allowed to share in their day and get to know them in a more meaningful way. They were married on the 11th at Architectural Artifacts. I had been wanting to shoot here for a while, and the space definitely exceeded my expectations. Chock full of antiquities and quirky artifacts, the space was ripe with shooting possibilities and created a very engaging atmosphere for guests. The wedding was full of beautiful details that Brett and Julie worked so hard on, and the day was overall a beautiful testament to their relationship and their friends and family. I love so many of these pictures and hope everyone else does too! Thanks also to the always great Frank for doing a great job shooting with me.
Here are some of the vendors that made the day possible!
