I was introduced to Kerri through an old photographer friend of mine—we both had photos in my first show at a little gallery in Bucktown several years ago—and now, several years later, I am so excited to have met such a wonderful couple via that connection! We could not have had better weather for this shoot—what a dream. Kerri was worried her pink dress would clash with all the colours, but it was the perfect choice—popping against the vibrant greens and golds we had in October. And these two were so easy to shoot—what a gorgeous couple, and I just cannot get enough of Kerri’s beautiful smile. So authentic and lovely. I cannot wait for their wedding next spring at one of my favourite venues, The Rookery.
Abby and Michael are one of my many couples this year that met when they were in school. I love photographing these couples as having been together for so many years creates such a relaxed, intimate feeling between them. Couples that have known each other for so long tend to feel naturally at ease with one another and just have a different level of calmness and comfort between them. Abby and Michael were no exception, with such a relaxed and sweet energy between them. I had such a wonderful time shooting with them and cannot wait for their wedding this fall at a winery downstate. I think it will be so amazing, particularly with Abby’s amazing red hair against the backdrop of the fall colors. Can’t wait!
Oh, these two! I just love these two. From the first consult with Dan and Keila, I felt like we were a bit of kindred spirits. I was able to spend almost the entire day with them recently after helping out at a video shoot for them, and then spending a few hours with them for their session. There are so many things I enjoy about this couple—their humor, wit, and thoughtfulness being high on the list—and another quality that stands out so significantly in how intentional they are. When discussing their wedding plans, everything is incredibly thought through—not in a way that things are overwrought, but rather, they are a couple that is striving to have meaning behind all of their choices. I so appreciate when couples do this and think it really makes for an incredible experience for the guests. For their engagement session, it was no different, and rather than just selecting a cool area, they really want to choose locations that held personal meaning for them. As such, we traipsed around their old neighborhoods, stopping off at several little nooks where many, many cups of coffee and pastries were consumed while studying. I cannot wait (can’t wait!!) for their wedding coming up in just a few short weeks at Salvage One. Rumour has it a pinata will be making an appearance and bossa nova will be played, so color me very, very excited…
I cannot say how excited I am to be back shooting with sunsets! Here are two from yesterday up in the North Shore.
I first met with Amy a few months ago, and at our initial meeting, I just knew we were the perfect match. We talked about our similar views on family and legacy, and both were excited about the possibility of working with one another. Amy also talked about how her fiance, David, whom she met in kindergarten (!), proposed at the beach around their homes in the North Shore. We decided to start there for a very, very early morning session, and I woke up in pitch darkness to make the trek up the lake. It was so stunning though—magical, peaceful, quiet, and I am always surprised by how different the shoreline is up north than down in the city.
During the consultation, Amy also mentioned how she and her fiance, David, were in the process of gutting a two-flat in Roscoe Village and turning it into their dream home. The wheels started turning in my head, and I became so interested in the idea of creating a set of images in the very beginnings of their family’s home. One of my biggest motivations in my work is children—imagining how I would like my children to see me in pictures (for me, looking beautiful, in love, and having a great, fun time). I thought it would be so neat for Amy and David to have some photographs of them inside the house in it’s rubble state, to be able to show their children as they are growing up in the home. After a quick session at the beach, we headed over to their new home and brought this to life. I was so pleased with how these came out—I would just die for a picture of my parents laughing in the house I grew up in, before I was born, a la the second to last photo.
Overall, this was one of my favourite sessions, with beautiful and unique locations and also so much personal meaning built into it. Amy and David are also just the kindest couple, and I only wish their wedding were later in 2011 so I had more time to spend with them. That said, I can’t wait for their celebration this winter at the beautiful Cafe Brauer!
