I was recently out in San Francisco for a workshop, and while there, did an engagement session for my best friend, Miss Laura, and her great fiance, Dan. We wandered around their adorable home in the Mission and also went out to the Embarcadero and the Bay Bridge before the fog became too much! I adore (adore) San Francisco and try to spend as much time out there as possible; this was my third time shooting there, and I never tire of it. So many beautiful stoops, gorgeous colors of buildings and flowers, and always perfect shooting weather. Can’t wait to go back again.
Laura and I met in Chicago several years ago while we were freelancing for a website—writing and photographing—and bonded over a love of Top Chef, food and cocktails, and karaoke. When she decided to move back home to the Bay Area a few years ago, I was a bit crushed, despite knowing it was the best choice for her. I went to visit her for New Years 2009 and while there she was telling me about a new guy she was planning to go out with. I could tell she was excited, but little did I know that man would end up being Dan, her fiance! I think my friends would describe me as a fiercely loyal friend and a bit of a mother hen—I put up with no shenanigans from my friend’s significant other’s and want only the best people to end up with my closest friends! After having met Dan several times, I could not be happier for him to be marrying Laura, and by proxy, to be joining a little piece of my little friend family. :) A million mazels to you both!
Zena and Lance met at Burning Man; I met them on another celebratory day, New Year’s Eve 2009 at a little bar in the San Francisco Mission. I was introduced to them and thought that they were just the cutest couple I had seen, and we briefly chatted about their wedding. As time went on we talked on and off about having me shoot their wedding, but dates and other issues stood in the way. We finally were able to make it work for their Sunday celebration a few weeks ago, and I am so thrilled to have shot this amazing wedding and gorgeous couple (if you can find a cuter one, please let me know).
This wedding was really about friends, family and community, with so many people playing a role in making everything come together, from the cupcakes to the centerpieces, the wonderful band to the invitations. Zena did an amazing job scouting out a few locations for us in the Oakland hills and surrounding parks. San Francisco is one of my favourite places in the country, and shooting out there is always sure a pleasure. The light and environment is just unreal, and completely different from Chicago. I also shot a ton of film at this wedding as part of a little challenge/artistic fulfillment to myself, and loved how many of them turned out.
Here are a few vendors since I’ve already got a few emails! Dress: BCBG Shoes: Cole Haan Invitations: Illustrated and designed by bride’s sister and friend (email for info) Venue: Montclair Women’s Club Catering: Picante Band: Andrew Conklin Band (I don’t know how regularly these guys play weddings but they were great!)

Waiting for the film to come back next week from this amazing wedding (another for the favourites list)...

Kelly blogs for Elizabeth Anne Designs (the blog I also guest blog for) and is having a bigger wedding later this fall in Alabama. Kelly contacted me a few weeks ago about possibly shooting that wedding, but I was already booked. We continued a little conversation, and she told me that she and her fiance, Garrett, were thinking about going to San Francisco before the wedding to have a more intimate ceremony. After another week or so, she contacted me again to see if I might be interested in going out to California to shoot their little “planned elopement,” and next thing I knew I was out to one of my favourite cities in the country to shoot this adorable couple. I won’t get into all of the details of the day, but let’s just say there were several little problems, but Kelly and Garrett both dealt with it so well, and their small trio of friends and family were absolutely wonderful about keeping spirits high. They were originally to be married at City Hall, but had to make some alternate adjustments, and instead did an impromptu ceremony behind the Ferry Building. I am so glad they did, though, as it was so beautiful and Kelly was absolutely giddy. Thank you so much for choosing me, you guys! I hope the rest of the trip was wonderful.

As per my last travel post, I’ve been travelling A LOT this year, and still have quite a bit to go. I unexpectedly booked a wedding out in San Francisco next month, and I am so thrilled to go back to one of my favourite cities. I will be there, most likely, August 11-13. I have room for 1-2 sessions if desired, particularly on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. If you live in the Bay Area or have a friend who might be interested in a connection session (great for engagements or a couple at any stage), potrait or boudoir, shoot me an email at olivia at olivialeighphotographie dot com.
Also a reminder that I will be out in D.C./NOVA next week and could do one session on Friday for someone out there.
Here is a quick photo that I took while at a boudoir session with a lovely bride-to-be yesterday. I have been very slowly and somewhat passively working on a collection of Chicago tilt-shift images from above to hopefully show in a gallery at some point, since the gallery showing has completely gone by the wayside since I’ve been so busy in the past year or so. Lots of days in hotel rooms prepping for weddings = lots of prime opportunities for photographing the city from up above.
